Mr. Emmanouil Toufexis, Director of AGAPE, gave a talk at the Parents’ School of the Holy Metropolis of Aitolia and Akarnania on the topic “The Language of Love: The Importance of Communication in Marriage”, emphasizing the power of communication as a cornerstone of a healthy and blessed family life. He underlined that a strong and loving relationship between parents offers children a deep sense of safety and emotional stability. Both research findings and life experience confirm that a happy marriage plays a decisive role in the emotional and spiritual growth of children. Giving priority to the marital bond, he noted, lays the firm foundation upon which family life is built.
Negative Factors in the Home
The speaker referred to the main factors that undermine the family environment and affect children’s psychology.
1. Conflicts Disagreements are normal in any relationship, but how they are handled makes all the difference. Constructive conflict resolution teaches children valuable communication and problem-solving skills. On the other hand, arguments filled with shouting, insults, or threats cause deep emotional wounds and lead to insecurity and behavioral issues.
2. Indifference Lack of care and attention from parents erodes a child’s self-esteem and emotional well-being. Parents are called to show consistent interest and involvement, creating a positive and supportive family climate.
3. Divorce Even the most amicable divorce causes emotional pain and confusion for children. Younger children may regress, while teenagers often experience depression or alienation. Still, a loving and supportive parental attitude can greatly reduce these effects.
Positive Factors in the Home
Mr. Toufexis then highlighted the elements that foster love, stability, and joy within the family.
1. The Art of Communication Communication is the “glue” that holds relationships together. Active listening, kindness, and the frequent expression of love strengthen the marital bond and provide children with emotional security.
2.The Power of Forgiveness Forgiveness, he said, is “the water that nourishes the flowers of the relationship.” It rejuvenates the couple, restores peace, and preserves unity in the home.
3.The Blessing of the Home Words of encouragement, quality time, acts of care, and love create an environment of blessing and harmony where all family members can thrive.
The Role of God in the Family
Mr. Toufexis placed particular emphasis on the couple’s relationship with God, noting that it largely determines the strength and unity of the family. When parents cultivate their own faith and relationship with Christ, they are able to pass on to their children authentic moral and spiritual values.
Practical Steps for Better Communication
In conclusion, Mr. Toufexis presented specific practical steps that can help couples improve their daily communication. He encouraged them to listen carefully, noting that active listening enhances understanding. He urged them to express themselves clearly, speaking honestly about their thoughts, feelings, and needs. Finally, he advised them to avoid escalating tensions, facing difficulties with respect and kindness so as to prevent conflicts and cultivate peace within the family.
Conclusion
Communication between spouses is essential for family unity and the mental health of children. The better our communication with God, the deeper and more genuine our communication with others becomes, helping us build a harmonious, loving, and spiritually healthy family.
