Event: “The Secularization of State and Society and the Witness of the Church” (September 2021)

As part of the Greece 2021 Committee events, and with the support of Agape, the Academy of Theological Studies of Volos and the Holy Metropolis of Demetrias organized the Third Round Table in the series Orthodoxy and ‘Others’ in Greece 2040, with the topic: “The Secularization of State and Society and the Witness of the Church.”

The event, moderated by Metropolitan Ignatios of Demetrias (Chair of the Academy’s Board and Coordinator of the Working Group Orthodoxy and ‘Others’ in Greece 2040), took place on Monday, September 21, 2021, at the Makedonia Palace Hotel in Thessaloniki. Distinguished speakers, including Fr. Theodosios Martzouchos (Theologian and Clergyman of the Holy Metropolis of Preveza), Dr. Aris Stylianou (Chair and Professor of the Department of Political Science at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), Prof. Grace Davie (Professor of Sociology at the University of Exeter, UK), and Mr. Pantelis Kalaitzidis (Director of the Academy of Theological Studies of Volos and Board Member of the European Academy of Religion), shared their perspectives on the Church’s role and its relationship with the State in an era of increasing secularization.

The two previous events in this series took place in Athens and Volos, respectively, with the themes: “Ourselves and the Others: Facts and Perspectives on Hellenism and Orthodoxy” and “The Formation of Modern Greek Identity in Today’s and Tomorrow’s Greece.” The fourth and final event will be held on Monday, September 27, in Alexandroupolis, on the topic: “Islam in Greece and Europe.”

According to Metropolitan Ignatios, the aim of these events is to compile a white paper that captures the perspectives and proposals of institutional bodies, special interest groups, internationally respected figures, and the plenary session of the National Committee. This white paper will outline Greece’s possibilities and prospects for the coming decades, taking into account Greece’s unique characteristics and the evolving European and global landscape.

Summaries of all presentations will be showcased at a major event organized by the Greece 2021 National Committee, to be held in mid-October at the Zappeion Hall.
